Special Projects

When a player successfully salvages a technology from an alien ship or colony or discovers an Asteroid Monitor, a new special project appears in the dropdown list on the top right of the Research Interface. By highlighting the project and clicking Start, research into the project is begun. From then until the project is completed or canceled, each special project draws ~50,000 from savings each turn. Canceling a special project before it is completed will end the project permanently and you will not be able to start it up again at any future date. Multiple special projects can be researched at one time.
The amount of research expenditure required to complete a special project is at least the same as if the technology was being researched the normal way, complete with chances of early breakthroughs and overruns. Completion of research on a special project can take significantly longer than normal research due to the limited expenditure on the project per turn.
Everything that boosts a players research ability (Killing VNs, showing up at Morrigi Ruins as Morrigi, taking over an Asteroid Monitor, stripping/killing a Derelict) boost ALL research, not just the regular research but special projects too. Science stations also boost research in a similar manner so having science stations at multiple worlds will help research not only the main technology faster but also any special projects.
Special projects fall into one of 10 categories. While the name of the project in each category is randomly assigned, the name is often related to the category in some way. But project names are not indicative of the actual technology being researched, only the category. The only exception to this is the Asteroid Monitor Control project, which will always state which system the Asteroid Monitor is in. With version 1.6.6, several project names that don't belong to any category were also added.
Also note that while race specific drives cannot be salvaged or researched, power technologies, such as Pulsed Fission, Micro-Fusion Drives or Recombinant Fissionables, can show up. A technology like Ramscoops could also show up if you are playing as the Hivers.
